Plastic Cup Rules: Everything You Need to Know

Every day, 19 million single-use plastic cups and packaging items are discarded in the Netherlands. Because plastic is difficult to degrade, reducing plastic waste and recycling it are crucial goals. Therefore, rules and regulations have been established for the production and use of plastic cups.

Are Plastic Cups Banned?

In recent years, regulations surrounding plastic cups have become stricter. As a catering company, coffee bar, or event organizer, you might think that all plastic cups are banned. This perception is understandable based on the news you may have read or heard, but apart from disposable coffee cups at offices and businesses, there is no outright ban on plastic cups. However, regulations have been introduced to help manufacturers, event organizers, and hospitality entrepreneurs reduce their plastic usage. These rules aim to facilitate a smooth transition to a society with less plastic waste.

Plastic Cup Regulations 2025

The most significant changes regarding plastic cup rules occurred in 2023 and 2024. As of July 1, 2023, visitors to open events must pay for using a disposable cup. This measure encourages the return and reuse of plastic drinking cups. Events such as King's Day, carnival, fairs, and street parties fall under this category. Starting January 1, 2024, these regulations also apply to fenced outdoor events and indoor ticketed events, such as festivals. Additionally, as of that date, plastic cups are banned at offices and businesses.

Sustainable Alternatives to Plastic Cups

There are numerous alternatives that comply with the ban on plastic cups in workplaces. For example, porcelain mugs or cup-and-saucer sets can be used in company cafeterias or offices. Reusable coffee cups are another great option for more traditional-looking office tableware.

Recycling Plastic Cups at Events

Since discarding plastic cups at events is largely prohibited, the rEVENT system has been introduced. This system ensures that at least 75% of used plastic cups are collected, retrieved, and sent to recycling companies. However, the plastic must be suitable for recycling. With our special event and festival cups, you can be confident that your plastic cups are compatible with the rEVENT system.
